The Great American Milk Drive Helps Get Milk to Florida Families in Need
Orlando, FL (PRWEB) September 14, 2015 -- That gallon of milk many consider a staple in your refrigerator is missing in Florida’s food banks and children in need are missing out on the essential nutrients that milk provides.
According to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, milk is one of the items most requested by food bank clients, yet there is a nationwide shortage because it is rarely donated. Feeding America clients receive the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year. The Great American Milk Drive, the first-ever national program to help deliver highly desired and nutrient-rich gallons of milk to hungry families who need it most, is working to change that in Florida and across the country.
Hunger Action Month
September is Hunger Action Month – Feeding America’s nationwide campaign that unites communities to take action against the issue of hunger and help raise awareness to support the more than 49 million Americans who struggle with food insecurity.
Hunger impacts 1 in 6 Americans, including nearly 16 million children, who may be missing out on milk’s nine essential nutrients. Hunger has no boundaries and is a problem that exists in urban, suburban and rural communities. In fact, more than 3.3 million people living in the state of Florida are considered food insecure according to Feeding America. More than 1 million of them are children.
Hunger Action Month is an ideal time to help Feeding America food banks throughout Florida get milk to families and children by donating online at http://www.milklife.com/give. By entering your zip code, you can ensure that the milk is delivered to a local Feeding America food bank in your very own community.
Milk is Requested in Food Banks, Yet Missing
While milk is one of the items most requested by food bank clients, local food banks can’t meet the demand. But since The Great American Milk Drive launched in 2014, more than 398,000 gallons – that’s more than 6.3 million servings – of milk have been donated to people who rely on the nation’s food banks to help supply their families with not only the food, but also the good nutrition they need to help power their potential.
