Amy Forman Taub, MD, of Advanced Dermatology, Chosen to Present on KYBELLA™, at the 2015 ASDS Annual Meeting Hot Topic Symposium
(PRWEB) September 18, 2015 -- Amy Forman Taub, MD, Founder and Medical Director of Advanced Dermatology and Skinfo, LLC, was one of first of 57 physicians chosen to be trained on KYBELLA™ (deoxycholic acid), the first new injectable drug specifically developed for aesthetic use to destroy fat cells in a double chin.
On Thursday, October 15 in Chicago at the ASDS annual meeting, Dr.Taub, one of five physicians, was chosen to present her early experience and techniques for patient selection and injecting KYBELLA™ and to perform a live treatment demonstration for the attendees at the Hot Topics Symposium.
KYBELLA™ is a synthetic injectable solution that contains an exact copy of deoxycholic acid; a bile salt the body produces to help digest fat. In a sterile solution of 2 ml vials containing 10mg/cc, it is injected into the submental fat to reduce what is known as a “double chin”. The specific FDA indication is for improvement of the appearance of moderate to severe fullness associated with submental fat in adults. Limitations to this label are that injection anywhere on the body other than in the submental area has not been tested and is not recommended.
KYBELLA™ solution is injected into precisely spaced dots placed in a specific anatomic area that requires specialized training to identify. Side effects included pain during and after the procedure caused both by the injections and by the material causing tightness or burning in the immediate 15-30 minutes after the injection, redness, firmness of the skin, bruising and numb sensations. Side effects can last for a few days to a few weeks and typically they subsided completely by one month. Only 1.6% of patients had severe adverse events, but all of these did resolve. The most significant side effect can be a temporary paralysis of a nerve that can weaken the smile and cause the mouth to look lopsided for up to 6 weeks.
Most people will require 2-4 monthly injection sessions, but some may require up to 6. Results are expected to be permanent, as the solution is cytolytic, meaning it kills the fat cells.
