Vertiba, a Colorado-based systems integrator, launches a new ecommerce system for Los Angeles Metro transit riders built on the Salesforce App Cloud to enable mobile responsiveness and vastly improved functionality.

We anticipate big growth in the number of patrons enjoying the convenience of TAP cards as a result of this project.

A fully redesigned web interface for the management of the TAP smart card system for the Los Angeles public transportation system was launched by Vertiba on August 25, 2015 and provides a vastly improved online experience for over half a million TAP card users.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is one of the largest in the country and serves over 1,433 square miles with a population of 9.6 million. The TAP cards are stored-value smart cards that allow bus and rail patrons to physically tap their cards on the farebox to pay for travel across 24 area transit agencies. While TAP cards are a convenient way for patrons to pay for transportation, the lack of a mobile responsive website and a cumbersome online experience were big deterrents to expanding their use among the 1.35m daily users of public transportation in Los Angeles County.

Vertiba, the leading Gold-level implementation partner for public sector projects, was retained to migrate the legacy system into in order to reduce the number of systems used, improve data quality, and build an entirely new mobile responsive website in this 6-month project.

“The new mobile responsive website ( allows over 540,000 existing TAP account owners to enjoy a streamlined process to manage real-time account information, purchase or reload cards, and manage lost cards” said Ted Battreall, Cofounder and President of Vertiba. “In addition, it enables a streamlined reduced-fare application process and allows corporate customers to manage large numbers of patrons with ease.”

“Approximately 40% of on-the-go TAP users access their accounts via mobile devices,” said Robin O’Hara, Deputy Executive Office for the Regional TAP Program. “Before this launch, accessing TAP accounts via mobile devices was nearly impossible. We anticipate big growth in the number of patrons enjoying the convenience of TAP cards as a result of this project. Working with Vertiba is great! They are wizards with technical architecture and they are experts at knowing the proper Salesforce capabilities to maximize your customer’s user interface. Their team is very attentive to your needs.”

About Metro
Metro is a multimodal transportation agency that is really three companies in one: a major operator that transports about 1.5 million boarding passengers on an average weekday on a fleet of 2,000 clean air buses and six rail lines, a major construction agency that oversees many bus, rail, highway and other mobility related building projects, and it is the lead transportation planning and programming agency for Los Angeles County. Overseeing one of the largest public works programs in America, Metro is, literally, changing the urban landscape of the Los Angeles region. Dozens of transit, highway and other mobility projects largely funded by Measure R are under construction or in the planning stages. These include five new rail lines, the I-5 widening and other major projects.
