CRC Press Counterterrorism Publication Receives Award
BOCA RATON, Fla., USA (PRWEB) September 29, 2015 -- CRC Press is pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Hesterman has received the 2014 ASIS Security Book of the Year Award for her book “Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack.”
Founded in 1955, ASIS is the leading organization for security professionals, with more than 38,000 members worldwide. The ASIS Security Book of the Year Award recognizes the contributions of authors in the security profession, with recipients chosen by a committee of ASIS members who are established and recognized security authors and editors.
Although there is an increase in soft target activity—attacks on places of worship, study, and leisure—there is hesitation to explore such susceptibility in the United States. Using more than 275 sources, “Soft Target Hardening: Protecting People from Attack” starts the national dialogue by exploring case studies, presenting best practices, and discussing methodologies for identifying soft target vulnerabilities and reducing risk in the U.S.
Dr. Hesterman says of her book: “I wrote the book with the hopes of starting the national dialogue on a topic that is hard to wrap our minds around: the vulnerability of soft targets to attack by terrorist organizations wishing to further their nefarious goals. Civilians are now seen as legitimate targets by those who wish to do us harm, and the book serves to educate them on the threat and the most effective response. The response to my book has been overwhelming, with readers ranging from school principals to church leaders and hospital administrators, all seeking to better understand how to reduce risk and protect their staff and facility users.”
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, a senior fellow of the Foundation for Defence of Democracies and CEO of Valens Global, concurs with Hesterman: “As we increasingly see ghastly attacks against venues that we would like to be ‘off limits,’ it is vital to consider our vulnerabilities, and what steps we should take to protect ourselves. Dr. Hesterman’s volume, an in-depth examination of the problem of soft targets, makes a vital contribution to a discussion that must continue.”
