Springer Publishing Bids Farewell to CEO Ted Nardin, Names Mary Gatsch as Successor
New York, NY (PRWEB) September 24, 2015 -- Springer Publishing Company, in the year of its 65th anniversary as a company, is pleased to announce that it has named Mary E. Gatsch as the company’s next CEO and Publisher, effective September 28. Gatsch joins the company from Elsevier, where she was Vice President, Global Medical Reference. As CEO, her priorities will be to guide Springer Publishing’s expanding content portfolio and set the strategy for print and digital products. Gatsch succeeds Theodore (Ted) C. Nardin, who is retiring after 10 years in the leadership role.
“I am honored to be asked to join Springer Publishing at this important time in its history and the year of its 65th anniversary,” said Gatsch. “I feel passionate that the kind of high-quality and cutting-edge content that Springer Publishing produces in the nursing, medical, and social science specialties is ripe for greater digital distribution and innovation. I look forward to working with the Springer Publishing team to harness – and create – new technologies and applications with the potential to bring Springer Publishing’s content to large, global markets. In so doing, I’m confident we can enable new and existing professional and academic audiences to utilize our incredible content in new and more impactful ways. I thank Ted Nardin for leading the company to where it is today and leaving us in such a remarkable position!”
At Elsevier, Gatsch directed the content and product portfolio strategy for medical information products across more than 38 specialties, from content acquisition to brand management, diversifying the product portfolio across a variety of formats, platforms and price points. Prior to joining Elsevier, Gatsch was a consultant, assisting Providence Equity Partners and their companies in evaluating acquisition candidates and in supporting the acquired businesses. Prior to consulting, Gatsch was President of Peterson’s, A Division of Thomson Learning, where she developed a digital strategy and led the company through its transformation to an award-winning provider of test preparation and college planning solutions in both print and online, significantly growing online revenues by creating new means and channels for monetizing digital products and applications.
Martin Bussmann, Trustee of The Mannheim Trust, owner of Springer Publishing, said: “For the past decade, Ted has been an exemplary leader at Springer Publishing, ably guiding and growing the company through a period of dramatic change in the publishing business. He has laid an outstanding foundation for future growth. Mary’s record of success in medical and academic publishing makes her the ideal person to guide the company through the next decade of change and innovation – and beyond.”
Over the course of his tenure as CEO, Nardin led an increase of revenue of 500% and the growth of the company’s book publishing programs in medicine, nursing, and social sciences. Furthermore, he oversaw the launch of the company’s digital products, including ebooks, mobile apps, and software. Prior to joining Springer Publishing, Nardin served as a Group Vice President at McGraw-Hill Professional Book Group for 14 years and was with Prentice Hall for 17 years in a variety of editorial, marketing, and management positions. Nardin will remain on the Springer Publishing Board of Directors.
Said Nardin: “It’s been an honor leading Springer Publishing for the past 10 years. I am most pleased by the talented, dedicated, and innovative team that has been responsible for Springer Publishing’s growth. Under Mary Gatsch’s leadership, I am sure the team will continue its dedication to excellence and innovation in all aspects of publishing.”
