The Art of Rejuvenation Takes on a New Meaning in an Historic Virginia Town
Petersburg, VA (PRWEB) September 25, 2015 -- Sandhi Schimmel Gold (http://www.schimmelart.com) is an artist that has been "rejuvenating" junk mail for over 15 years. Sandhi upcycles paper that would otherwise go to waste, using it to create eye-catching, eclectic and eco-friendly fine art.
Her work is very complicated and time consuming, she can only create a few original pieces a year. It is featured in select private, corporate and museum collections around the world.
For years, Schimmel Gold worked alone in her home studio, but missed the company of fellow artists and the ability to interface with the collectors who seek her out. When a bright space in historic "Old Towne" Petersburg became available, Schimmel Gold saw an opportunity to bring her unique style to this small town by filling the space with her art and all the materials—including her huge collection of junk mail—to create more.
With the addition of her new studio and gallery, The Art Room (http://www.TheArtRoomPetersburg.com) hopes to bring positive change to Petersburg. "I see potential in this beautiful little town," states Schimmel Gold. "It has good bones. I want to be part of the rejuvenation of this community."
Guests to the Gallery may find Schimmel Gold drawing or sorting or cutting or glueing... and perhaps fellow artists painting, hanging work, or just visiting. The name, "The Art Room," harkens back to the days where she and most of her friends hung out during school [instead of math, science or sports].
The Art Room is not only a working artist's studio; it is a fine art gallery that features Schimmel Gold’s original work and reproductions on paper and canvas. The display changes often, and includes artwork by regional and national artists. A huge installation of small, individual pieces [Miroir Aux Alouettes] takes up an entire wall. In addition, there are ceramics, paintings, jewelry and furniture. These are all items that can not be found anywhere else.
The first juried show, "An Unkindness of Ravens," opens Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 6:30 in the evening. This show will feature original artwork inspired by Poe, who honeymooned in Petersburg. The date is also the anniversary of Poe's death. On hand will be author Jeff Abugel, who will sign his book "Poe's Petersburg, Untold Story of the Raven in the Cockade City." RSVP's are requested.
The Art Room Gallery's Open Studio hours are Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM, or whenever Bruno and Sylvester are out [the Gallery's hot pink and lime green lion mascots]. The Gallery is open to the public every Friday for the Arts [second Friday or each month] and by appointment. The Gallery is located at 10 Bollingbrook Street, Petersburg, VA 23803
