On Tuesday, Sept. 29, San Leandro Celebrates Topping off of Tech Campus and Looks to City’s Future as New Tech Hub
San Leandro, CA (PRWEB) September 28, 2015 -- On Tuesday, Sept. 29, Westlake Urban, OSIsoft, the City of San Leandro, and the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce are hosting a daylong event at the San Leandro Tech Campus (SLTC), 1600 Alvarado St. in San Leandro. The day’s events will celebrate San Leandro’s transformation from an industrial past to a technology-focused future as the Bay Area’s newest tech hub. A “topping off” celebration for the first six-story building at SLTC will start at 10 a.m. followed by an afternoon event at 1:00 p.m., hosted by San Leandro By Design, to celebrate the importance of public art, transit and public spaces in our communities.
Marco Cochrane, the artist and creator of Truth is Beauty—a momentous 55-foot tall sculpture that will be located on the Tech Campus—will discuss his artistic commitment to a world where women feel safe. Artists, public officials and business and community leaders will describe the critical role that public art, public transit and safe, active public spaces play in creating dynamic, livable cities.
Speakers include: San Leandro Mayor, Pauline Russo Cutter; Marco Cochrane, Artist, Sculptor and Creator of Truth is Beauty; Jenny Linton, President, OSIsoft; Rebecca Saltzman, BART Director; Robert Raburn, BART Director; and Ben Davis, Founder and Chief Visionary Officer, Illuminate the Arts.
TRANFORMATION, a San Leandro By Design event facilitated by UIX Global, 1-5 p.m., invites the local community to a discussion about how public art, innovative technologies, transit and safe, people-focused places lead to successful economic, environmental and social transformation. A networking reception will follow, with food and beverage provided by local vendors. Proceeds from the event will benefit at-risk youth receiving services at the REACH Ashland Youth Center through the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League.
Speakers include: Marco Cochrane, Artist and Creator of Truth is Beauty; Ben Davis, Founder, Illuminate the Arts; Deborah Acosta, Chief Innovation Officer, City of San Leandro; Gregory Tung, Principal, Freedman Tung + Sasaki Urban Design; and Abby Thorne-Lyman, Principal Planner, BART.
“The San Leandro Tech Campus is representative of our commitment to the community to make San Leandro the Center for Innovation in the Bay Area,” said Mayor Pauline Cutter. “Today, we take a big leap forward with a well-connected and innovative 500,000 square foot office space that is poised to be the future of business and industry.”
“Westlake Urban, as the developer of the San Leandro Tech Campus, is proud to be part of San Leandro’s transformation from an industrial city to a center of technology and innovation,” said Gaye Quinn, Managing Director, Westlake Urban. “The site, formerly occupied by a Del Monte cannery, is a perfect illustration of San Leandro’s emergence as the newest Bay Area powerhouse with the fastest broadband speeds in the nation.”
“We’re also thrilled to be a participant in the conversation we are having today about San Leandro’s rich history and what it means to embrace the future while also addressing the needs of the families, workers and businesses that are the backbone of this community,” said Quinn.
“We want to thank the city and community leaders and our business partners, who have worked tirelessly to support the Tech Campus and the installation of Marco’s Cochrane’s magnificent sculpture, Truth is Beauty,” said Quinn. “This bold, beautiful sculpture will become a vital icon of San Leandro’s transformation, but it comes with a responsibility, too, a responsibility to engage in a serious conversation about what needs to change for women to feel safe from violence and injustice.”
“We love San Leandro, and we are proud to be the first tenant in the first building of the San Leandro Tech Campus,” said Jenny Linton, President, OSIsoft. “San Leandro and the Tech Campus are critical to our success with access to a large workforce, an ideal location next to the San Leandro BART station, and now with the fastest broadband in the county. We’ve been in San Leandro for 35 years, and we look forward to be being part of this growing technology hub.”
