On October 1, 2015, Professional Tattoo Artist CJ McCaskill, also known as CJGotInk, will become one of Downtown West Palm Beach’s newest art residents by officially opening Got Ink Studios Tattoo Shop & Art Gallery. A lifelong artist, McCaskill began tattooing in 2010, and in less than five years has become a nationally recognized, award winning tattoo artist. Though most of McCaskill’s clients seek him out for his portrait, photo realism, and custom tattoos, his client base also attests to his experience and skill in applying Traditional, Neo-Traditional, New School, Abstract, Bio-organic, and Japanese Traditional tattoos as well.
Having spent several years in the Atlanta art scene before moving to Palm Beach County in 2014, McCaskill's vision for Got Ink Studios was a modern tattoo shop and art gallery combined. After looking at various retail locations for almost seven months, the young artist was immediately attracted to the loft-style retail space conveniently located at the corner of Olive Avenue and Evernia Street. With the downtown area of West Palm Beach growing rapidly at the behest of the West Palm Beach Arts & Entertainment District, McCaskill believes that he will be able to attract both tattoo enthusiasts and casual art customers. “Olive Avenue is fun to be on because there’s so much foot traffic and such a diverse mix of people…Everybody that walks by does a double take,” McCaskill said while chuckling.
Only a block and a half away from Clematis Street, many pedestrians passing by Got Ink Studios are either residents or patrons heading to enjoy one of the city's busiest nightlife scenes. Many stop to peek in the windows and admire the 7 foot portrait that McCaskill painted on the front wall using only spray cans and an airbrush machine. Others stop and stare at the large, boldly painted canvases hanging on the 16 feet walls. “I have a few paintings up that I did, but most of these paintings are from my friends in Atlanta. I don’t charge artists for wall space, so hopefully I’ll get some local artists to hang their pieces soon too.”
In addition to the artistic elements of Got Ink Studios, McCaskill also did his best to create a modern, welcoming atmosphere and even went as far as opting for tablet portfolios instead of traditional photo albums. “My main priorities are to create quality original tattoos and maintain a professional and comfortable environment for my clients and the other artists working with me.”
Got Ink Studios Tattoo Shop and Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday in Downtown West Palm Beach. In addition to tattooing, Owner CJ McCaskill will host art events periodically throughout the year and plans to consign art from local artists. Current featured artists include Atlanta artists Corey Peterson, King Tat, Ink By Kali, Ant Man, and Emperor Tay. For more information, visit the shop’s website, Facebook, or Instagram.
