CIPD Reports Over Half of Graduates Overqualified for their Role - Is it time to encourage different career paths?
United Kingdom (PRWEB UK) 9 October 2015 -- A recent report has indicated that over-qualification has reached “saturation point”, with more than half of all UK graduates working in roles that do not require a degree.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) report showed that around 58.8% of those coming out of university are currently working in roles that are not designed for graduates and do not require a degree, and that the number of university graduates has now “significantly outstripped” the number of highly-skilled jobs being created. The CIPD has said that this should act as a warning about the career path we encourage young people to follow.
Chief executive of the CIPD, Peter Cheese said:
"The assumption that we will transition to a more productive, higher-value, higher-skilled economy just by increasing the conveyor belt of graduates is proven to be flawed.”
The report unveiled that mass-production of graduates is creating problems, including for employers who ask that applicants have degrees for roles traditionally filled by non-graduates - even though there has been no changes to the skills required for the role.
The result is that graduates are now replacing non-graduates in jobs where there was previously no demand for graduate skills. This has been particularly evident in the construction sector, where apprenticeships are the traditional route into the industry.
The report highlighted two areas for development. First, that more high-skilled jobs must be generated to prevent graduates skills being “simply wasted”, and secondly that it may be a better choice for young people to pursue an apprenticeship or some other form of non-university education.
A spokesman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said:
"We are providing the right mix of university places and apprenticeships to ensure more people have the opportunity to advance their careers and businesses to get the skills they need to grow.”
The CIPD has also produced a guide - “Great expectations: a careers guide for parents” - in order to help both parents and young people understand the different routes into a successful career and different learning and training options available to them.
