Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America Awarded Patient Engagement Project by PCORI
Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 12, 2015 -- The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has been selected to receive a Eugene Washington Engagement Award by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for a new project to prepare asthma patients to interact more effectively with the research community.
The project, entitled “Training Patients with Asthma to Understand and Participate in Patient-Centered Outcomes Research,” aims to increase the knowledge and skills of asthma patients, families and caregivers, and to prepare them to participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of outcomes research. The project also aims to train patients to understand and apply the results of research to guide their own healthcare decisions.
“This award allows AAFA to develop and expand relationships between patients and researchers,” says Meryl Bloomrosen, Senior Vice President of Policy and Research at AAFA. “We will be working closely with AAFA Regional Chapters to help make patients with asthma, and their families and caregivers, more active participants in research.”
The project is part of a portfolio of projects approved for PCORI funding to help develop a skilled community of patients and other stakeholders from across the entire healthcare enterprise and to involve them meaningfully in every aspect of PCORI’s work. AAFA’s winning proposal was selected by PCORI through a highly competitive review process. Projects were assessed for their ability to encourage active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians and other healthcare stakeholders as members of the patient-centered outcomes research enterprise.
“This project was selected for Engagement Award funding not only for its commitment to engaging patients and other stakeholders, but also for its potential to increase the usefulness and trustworthiness of the information we produce and to facilitate its dissemination and uptake,” said Jean Slutsky, PCORI’s Chief Engagement and Dissemination Officer. “We look forward to following the project’s progress and working with AAFA to share the results.”
PCORI is an independent, non-profit organization authorized by Congress in 2010 to fund comparative effectiveness research (CER) that will provide patients, caregivers, and clinicians with the evidence needed to make better-informed healthcare decisions.
