Sheer Joy Translates to Success for Young Sailor.
(PRWEB) October 10, 2015 -- If you want to see a young sailor tearing it up, call for an invitation to come down to the King Harbor Yacht Club (KHYC) and watch the King Harbor Youth Foundation’s (KHYF) nine year old sensation pound his way through the waves with controlled abandon and unbridled glee.
Scotty’s enthusiasm for sailing has been recognized. He is being nominated for the ASMBYC (Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs) Junior Sportsman Award. Luke Pond, a fourteen-year-old sailor is being nominated for Junior Yachtsman.
While most Opti sailors sail at the King Harbor Yacht Club twice a week, Scotty sails at least five days per week. Scotty’s dad Keith states that: “Scotty’s love of sailing is a great motivator. He knows he cannot come down to the dock until he finishes his homework. He organizes his time to get it done. “
Each club gets to nominate one sailor for each award. Sportsman is awarded to a sailor for demonstrating the Corinthian spirit (an exceptionally high level of sportsmanship). The Yachtsman Award is based on competition results.
King Harbor Yacht Club Commodore Debbie Helling states: “Scotty is an absolute joy. He helps everyone he sees at the KHYC with rigging, carrying sails, etc. He likes sailing with the older kids because he sees them as mentors. His attitude and exuberance are contagious.”
The King Harbor Youth Foundation’s Director Anne Popolizio added: “Nominating Scotty for this recognition was obvious. On several occasions he regularly goes out of his way to help another sailor. He is a great sailor and an even better sportsman.”
About King Harbor Yacht Club
King Harbor Yacht Club (KHYC) has been located in King Harbor in beautiful Redondo Beach, CA since 1960. It is open 7 days a week, hosts 1,458 slips, and has ten official fleets. KHYC has an active racing schedule, offers club cruises to locations all over Southern California, has a popular fishing fleet, and hosts educational and social events. Boat ownership is not required to be a member of KHYC, just an interest in boating and having fun!
The King Harbor Yacht Clubs also houses a 501c3 non-profit organization entitled the King Harbor Youth Foundation. This group was created to promote youth sailing in Southern California. The mission is to provide access to the sport of sailing to local girls and boys of all backgrounds, in order to build self-esteem, teamwork and a respect for the environment.
New Channels is a program that operates under the King Harbor Youth Foundation. It was developed as an avenue to get individuals on the water that would not otherwise have the opportunity. The Foundation puts its resources to work with many diverse groups, taking their members out for a boating experience in the King Harbor channel, with brief interludes into the ocean.
