Perception Neuron, the wireless, full-body, motion capture system that uses inertial sensors to track and record movement in real-time, is a viable tool for use not just in animation, gaming and special effects, but also as a way for sports professionals to train clients more accurately and for doctors to treat patients living with physiological ailments.

As the Beijing-based company continues to offer their special academic pricing packages to students, educators and educational facilities, they are also focusing their efforts in touting their motion capture technology as a useful addition for the work of sports professionals and doctors.

“Most people looking for motion capture come from the game development or visual effects worlds, but we see a need to open up this type of affordable technology for use in areas such as sports and medicine where it can have a much more important impact on society,” says Tristan Dai, CTO and developer of Perception Neuron. “By making this type of technology both affordable and accessible to schools, medical facilities and sports professionals, we are giving these industries the opportunity to discover groundbreaking techniques and treatments that can help people in many profound ways.”

With Perception Neuron’s series of straps which hold the sensors in place and that attach easily and securely to the major parts of the body, coaches and personal trainers can use the system to enhance player performances by simulating plays, perfecting training techniques and tracking individual physical progress. mySwing®— an affiliate of Noitom that resulted from a collaboration with a group of golf experts—is another innovative motion capture product that uses biomechanical data to assist in professional golf training.

Doctors and therapists can use motion capture technology to find and diagnosis treatments for their patients. The 3D motion information captured can help in a variety of uses including physical therapy, rehabilitation, visualization techniques in psychology and assisting in treatments for movement disorders such as cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. Noitom’s clients include members of the medical field in North America and Europe, and the company also shares a joint lab with both Zhejiang University and Beijing University where they regularly conduct medical research.

“We really want to emphasize just how useful a technology Perception Neuron can be to professionals outside of the gaming and visual effects fields,” says Roch Nakajima, Americas/Europe Marketing Director. “By putting this type of tool in the hands of educators, as well as people in the sports and medical fields, we are truly providing a vehicle for them to expand the horizons of their students, clients and patients. They can use this technology to improve lives.”
