On Sunday, October 18, the Sierra Regional Spine Institute will participate as one of many sponsors of the Run for Education fundraiser in support of all Washoe County students. This is the first time the institute has helped sponsor the annual run, which is being held at the Legends at Sparks Marina outlet mall outside Reno, Nevada.

The family and youth-focused event features untimed races around the Marina, including a 10k run, a 5k walk and run, and a kids' fun run. The 2015 Run for Education was organized by the Education Alliance, a non-profit created by local civic leaders, business people, and educators seeking to support local schools. So far, the Education Alliance has already raised more than $2.4 million to promote physical and academic excellence among students in Washoe County.

Although this is the first partnership between the Sierra Regional Spine Institute and the Education Alliance, Practice Administrator Penny Forbes said the medical practice has been involved in education programs like this since its founding. At the high school level, the institute has supported the Washoe County Gifted and Talented Program as well as the University of Nevada Reno's Family Practice Volunteer Faculty initiative, which helps train new physicians. In addition, several of the practice's spinal surgeons serve as clinical instructors with the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Nevada Reno.

“We thought we would continue with our support of education by sponsoring the Run for Education in support of our Washoe County School District. We encourage exercise in all our patients, and believe physical education should start at the earliest age possible," Forbes said.

The Reno practice provides spinal treatments, surgery, and other spine services to local residents, many of whom suffer from chronic low back and neck pain. Regular exercise, like participating in fun runs and 5k races, has helped many people prevent and recover from chronic pain.
