Sorrel Sky Gallery is pleased to present a trunk show by jewelry designer and master goldsmith Gurhan at the Durango gallery on Thursday, December 3 from 5 – 7:00 p.m. and Friday, December 4 during Noel Night from 5 – 9:00 p.m. - just in time for the holidays.
It was 1994 when Gurhan, a native of Turkey, fell in love with the sensual properties of 24 karat gold – a material that had been all but forgotten by jewelers since ancient times due to its soft, heavy qualities. He decided then and there, at the age of 40, to become a jeweler and work with this unique material. Gurhan’s reincarnation of ancient goldsmith techniques first won him recognition in the late 1990s by Barneys New York.
Gurhan’s inspiration is pure and classic: he has borrowed from the techniques and material choices of the Anatolian and Byzantine empires yet his style is elegant, unique and eternal. Every handmade piece has small imperfections from the hand hammering and handcrafted work that he calls his “fingerprints.” Along with mixing metals to create dazzling contrast, his collections often incorporate various stones, from turquoise and moonstone to black pave diamonds, various colored emeralds, and cabochons of tourmaline.
Sorrel Sky owner, Shanan Campbell Wells, offered, “Gurhan’s jewelry is exquisite. The genuine timeless quality and beauty of his collections make his jewelry sought after by celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez, and First Ladies Hilary Rodham Clinton and Laura Bush.”
