Pearson announced today that the new REVEL Efficacy Report, which details the results following six implementations of the technology and best practices for a successful implementation, is now available. REVEL is an immersive learning experience that enlivens familiar and respected course content with media interactives and assessments. The digital learning solution provides course content in bite-sized portions and is integrated with narrative, engaging activities and videos. Released in early 2015, REVEL has been used by more than 120,000 learners across 80 courses and 12 subjects such as history, psychology, sociology, art history and more. Educators at over 650 higher education institutions nationwide are using the innovative digital solution to improve teaching and learning.
With more than 2.1 million students on 112 campuses, the California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the United States. Two schools included in the system, College of the Sequoias and Fresno City College, used REVEL in Introduction to Sociology classrooms. After the implementations, faculty reported that students came to class better prepared. Students lacking strong study skills benefited most and scored significantly higher on exams than students in the same course the previous year. The correlation between overall REVEL scores and final course grades was strong. To help her students stay on top of their reading assignments and improve their study skills, Catherine R. Medrano, Instructor, Sociology Department, Fresno City College, implemented REVEL in her Introduction to Sociology course in the spring of 2015. Students were assigned a reading and quizzes before each class. At the end of the term, Medrano saw that the average exam score increased 15 points after REVEL was implemented. “I could tell that REVEL was making a difference by the increased participation and engagement in class and I am very pleased to see this backed up with data,” said Professor Medrano.
“REVEL is designed to make a measurable impact on defined learner outcomes related to access, completion, and progression,” said John Tweeddale, Pearson’s SVP of Efficacy and Quality. “Every step of the development of REVEL has followed a learner-focused, evidence-based process, to enable us to collect and report on the product's impact on student achievement and results. This was accomplished through listening to instructors and students, by leveraging the best thinking in instructional research and design, and by applying new learning and assessment strategies.”
In addition to the case studies featured in this report, a number of educators report improved results since implementing REVEL. For instance, Coastal Bend College leveraged advances in digital learning technology to better engage students by implementing REVEL in Professor Karl Clark’s U.S. History Since 1865 course. After utilizing the platform for three chapters, students’ positive feedback led to its use for the remainder of the course. “The first time I used REVEL, I surveyed my students after three weeks and 85 percent of the class voted to continue using it. Students’ grades have improved, as the digital learning technology brings study materials to life by keeping students engaged and delivers content in a manner that facilitates true comprehension of course materials.” To learn more about Professor’s Clark’s story, watch this video.
