We’re counting on Excelera to aid our implementation of our specialty pharmacy to obtain optimal therapeutic benefit and compliance for these medications.
Minneapolis, MINN (PRWEB) October 14, 2015
The Excelera network consists of point-of-care specialty pharmacies owned by health systems and academic medical centers. The network provides members nationally scaled infrastructure and support to help them develop best practices and gain access to limited-distribution drugs and biologics and restrictive payer agreements so members can provide continuity of care for their patients with complex and chronic conditions requiring specialty drugs and biologics. The network also serves as a national platform for collaboration to optimize outpatient specialty drug therapy for population health.
“Specialty medications are reserved for the most difficult conditions to manage, and they account for up to 30% of health plan pharmacy costs,” said Tim Jennings, Pharm.D., Vice President, Pharmacy System Executive, Sentara Healthcare. “We’re counting on Excelera to aid our implementation of our specialty pharmacy to obtain optimal therapeutic benefit and compliance for these medications, so our patients achieve their best health and the maximum value from their medication regimen.”
“We are extremely delighted that Sentara Healthcare has joined the Excelera network,” said Jim Fox, Chief Executive Officer of the Excelera network. “Sentara Healthcare is an important member in our expanding specialty pharmacy network. Excelera is excited to provide this renowned healthcare organization with tools to assist it in continuing to provide outstanding care to its patients.”
Specialty pharmaceuticals are expensive drugs that require special handing and administration and are often used to treat the most ill and clinically complex patients. The Excelera organization will partner with Sentara Healthcare to develop key specialty pharmacy capabilities including training, operations, data aggregation, reporting for drug manufacturers and payers, revenue cycle management and pharmacy business office.
In addition to Sentara Healthcare, the Excelera organization includes Henry Ford Health System, Banner Health, Catholic Health Initiatives, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fairview Health Services (which includes the University of Minnesota Medical Center), Intermountain Healthcare, Loma Linda University Medical Center, Yale New Haven Health System, Avera Health and Regional Health.
