Curadux Founder Pens Op-Ed in Modern Healthcare
Austin, TX (PRWEB) October 14, 2015 -- David L. Brown, founder of Curadux and the former chair of the Anesthesiology Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, today penned an op-ed in Modern Healthcare that warns of systemic risks of overtreatment and undertreatment of conditions for individuals and families facing advanced illness.
Brown, who spent 38 years practicing medicine and leading elite medical departments in the United States, warns that “[h]ealth systems are subtly incentivized to overtreat patients because they generate more revenue based on the volume of services provided.” This may cause “unwanted, invasive and expensive care, as well as unnecessarily prolonged and painful deaths.”
Recent efforts by policymakers to control healthcare costs have also introduced an emerging risk of undertreatment, according to Brown, by creating “an artificial mechanism for controlling demand by simply capping payments to providers through population-health concepts.”
He concludes that “[t]rue patient-centered care for patients and families facing an advanced illness is clearly ready for further innovation.”
