NEMA, an association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, publishes its ei magazine monthly, featuring the latest reports from Capitol Hill, what’s happening in the world of standards, and industry news. Each issue features an in-depth look at technical issues, international developments, and information about various new technologies and projects.
In the October 2015 issue, which focuses on standards and the marketplace, Clarion’s CEO, Geoffrey Peckham, contributes a featured column on safety label standards, “ANSI Z535.4 and ISO 3864-2: How Their Development and Harmonization Opens New Global Markets.”
“Reducing risk and expanding global markets are top priorities for large and small companies today. For product manufacturers, achieving these goals has been significantly aided by the development of product safety label standards,” says Peckham. “How these standards came about is an interesting story.”
Peckham serves as chair of both the ANSI Z535 Committee for Safety Signs and Colors and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO Technical Committee 145 – Graphical Symbols. His credentials also include being selected as a member of the U.S. TAG to ISO/PC 283, an ISO committee writing a new standard, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, which will, when finished, define global best practices for workplace safety. In addition, he is an active member of many industry-specific standards committees related to safety signs and labels for buildings, ships, machinery and products.
In the article, he explains the impact of the development and publication of the ANSI Z535.4 Standard for Product Safety Signs and Labels in 1991 and of ISO 3864-2 Graphical symbols – Safety colours and safety signs – Part 2: Design principles for product safety labels in 2004.
