Carson City, NV (PRWEB) October 21, 2015 -- The newly re-designed Pets of the Homeless website provides enhanced information on how to find services for homeless people and their pets in the United States.
Features include a new resources section and interactive map where you can find food and supplies, shelters, donation sites and resources in a specific area. The map can even detect your location and find services close to you. The enhanced donations page offers a fun way to donate, as you watch adorable animations of kittens and a dog. The donation page accepts major credit cards. The site also features responsive design, friendly for the nearly 50 percent of users who visit the site using mobile devices.
Genevieve Frederick founded Pets of the Homeless in 2006 to offer animals the food their owners cannot provide. The organization garnered nonprofit status in 2008. Today, Pets of the Homeless is an organization who’s mission is simple – to feed and provide basic veterinary care to pets of homeless people in the United States and Canada.
"Our goal with the new website is to connect more people to more of the services we offer,” said Genevieve Frederick, founder of Pets of the Homeless. “Since 2008, collection site members have taken over 381 tons* of pet food and supplies to homeless shelters, food banks and soup kitchens across the country. We believe the website can even further that cause.”
*Approximately 50 percent of the collection sites report the amounts, so the number is actually greater.
Homelessness is still an issue even as the economy brightens. 3.5 million Americans are homeless. Between 5 and 10 percent of homeless people have dogs and/or cats. In some areas of the country, the rate is as high as 24 percent.
Pets of the Homeless has more than 400 distribution locations in food banks and soup kitchens in nearly every state. Over 761,000 lbs. of food and supplies have gone to tens of thousands of animals. More than $312,000 has been provided for vet care expenses, pet food and crates.
As an outreach to the homeless who own pets, Pets of the Homeless also uses cash donations to provide veterinary care to pets of the homeless at free wellness clinics as well as emergency veterinary care across the country. More than 12,200 pets have been treated.
