Leading Therapeutic Program Supports Emotional Wellness Month
Salt Lake City, UT (PRWEB) October 22, 2015 -- Seven Stars, a therapeutic program combining elements of residential treatment and outdoor experiential therapy, offers advice for improving emotional wellness.
Emotional wellness means developing awareness and acceptance of one’s feelings. It is important to maintain emotional wellness in order to remain focused during stressful times and to build satisfying, lasting relationships. Maintaining emotional wellness is important for teens struggling with neurodevelopmental disorders who may already struggle in social situations.
As a program designed to help teens struggling with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, and learning disorders, Seven Stars understands the importance of emotional wellness and its role in helping students progress along a path towards success.
In order to maintain emotional wellness, Seven Stars’s leading clinical team offers the following recommendations:
Recognize emotions for what they are. Current feelings of anxiety can actually be residual feelings from weeks ago.
Label emotions. Instead of pushing emotions away, draw emotions closer by identifying what the feelings are.
Be mindful of emotions at all times. Being mindful of positive emotions on a good day allows for an increased awareness of emotions on days when negative emotions are more prevalent.
Boost self esteem. When self esteem is low, self criticism causes emotional armor to weaken. This leads to an increased vulnerability to anxiety and stress. By stopping self-critical thoughts in their tracks and focusing on self admiration and positivity, one can better balance emotions.
Develop realistic goals. Forming realistic goals and setting out to achieve those goals can reduce stress and emotional instability.
“At Seven Stars, we focus on teaching emotional regulation skills based on proven cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral methods to help our students maintain emotional wellness,” says Mark Rainsdon, Primary Therapist at Seven Stars. “These techniques encourage mindfulness of your emotions, being able to understand your emotions as they happen, as well as being able to see what those emotions actually mean to you.”
Seven Stars gives students the opportunity to practice emotional wellness skills on a daily basis by encouraging self and group awareness.
“If you’ve ever been part of a group, there’s always one or two people that try your patience,” continued Mr. Rainsdon, “At Seven Stars, teens struggling with social interactions and balancing emotions are able to integrate emotional wellness skills learned in group, individual, and family therapy into real world situations.”
By helping students learn skills supporting emotional wellness, Seven Stars has helped many students improve socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.
