Veterans Day 2015 – VetFriends.com Launches its 15th Annual Honor & Thanks Campaign – Honoring U.S. Veterans
Charleston, SC: (PRWEB) October 23, 2015 -- The hostilities of World War I ended with the 1918 armistice between the Allied nations and Germany, going into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. In remembrance of the sacrifices and acts of courage that many men and women made during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, stating:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"
In 1954, November 11 was officially changed to Veterans Day, to honor all veterans – wherever and whenever they served. Soldiers marched in hometown parades, politicians and veteran officers gave speeches, and ceremonies were held in celebration of peace, thereby cementing “Veterans Day” in the annals of U.S. tradition.
