Each year a little over two billion dollars are spent on Halloween candy. That is a lot of candy to deliver to children, and something which can be an issue in the weeks to come as children eat more than their share of this "treat." Knowing that most families will hand out sweets, the Wards would like to offer up suggestions for non-sweet treats that can help to take a bite out of the sugar overload that will effect children in the weeks following.
"From Halloween to New Years kids get so many sweets that are just not normally a part of their daily diet," says Dr. Ward. "They go from Halloween candies, to Thanksgiving pies, and then when December comes—oh man, they are eating sweets every day. So this year, why not try handing out healthy snacks to the kids that come to the door?"
Freeze dried fruit packets, mixed nuts, baby carrot packs, or cereal bars are healthy treats that can be handed out to Trick or Treaters, but there are other non-edible options as well that can be purchased at the local Dollar Tree, such as glow sticks or mini flashlights. Regardless of which option is chosen, the dental clinic will still offer teeth cleaning throughout the holiday season, as well as, their usual service areas in a pain-free, calm environment.
"We just want to offer some options, but we were kids once, too," says Ward. "Halloween and candy seem to go hand in hand. If they do gorge themselves we'll be here to clean those teeth and get them through yet another year."
