MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (PRWEB) October 28, 2015 -- Secura Consultants’ CEO George Davidson and his wife Mary Catherine Davidson, Commissions and Contracting Manager, recently visited Lloyd's of London for the first time during Lloyd's 325th anniversary. The trip also commemorated Secura Consultants' 20th year in business.
"Having the opportunity to visit Lloyd's and see the organization that has had such a significant impact on the insurance industry was an unforgettable experience, and to do so during their 325th year and our 20th year as a company made it all the more special," commented Mary Catherine.
During their visit, the Davidsons toured the Lloyd's headquarters on Lime Street in London with Mark Titmuss as their guide. Titmuss has been a Lloyd's Broker for 28 years; he currently heads up a team at Tysers, which has worked with Lloyd's as brokers since 1829. While visiting the Lloyd's Building, the Davidsons learned some of the rich and interesting history of Lloyd's of London.
George recounted his thoughts upon walking onto the trading room floor at Lloyd's: "One of the first things you see on the main floor is the rostrum with a large bell hanging in the center, the Lutine Bell, which was recovered in 1859 from the HMS Lutine, a ship Lloyd's insured before it sank in 1799 with its vast sum of gold and silver. There are brokers walking around conducting today’s business in the same room as this and other historical artifacts. It was very memorable to see both the reverence and appreciation Lloyd's has for the history of the market combined with the dedication these brokers have for the future."
The ringing of the Lutine Bell at Lloyd's was historically used to mark the sinking of a ship or a ship being overdue because Lloyd's original focus was insuring the shipping industry. Today, the Lutine Bell is used for ceremonial occasions or to announce significant events in the world. When the Lutine Bell is rung, a waiter dressed in traditional clothing will ring the bell once for bad news, twice for good and then will mark the date and occasion in the current logbook located in the center of the trading floor. Another notable part of their visit was the visit to the Adam Room used by the Council of Lloyd’s.
"This room was designed in 1763 and has been reconstructed using the original materials from the Bowood House which was substantively demolished in the 1950’s. Lloyd’s moved it to their building and then when the current building was built, it was moved again. It is a striking contrast to the modern building Lloyd’s currently inhabits! Walking into the Adam Room is like stepping into 1700’s; it really emphasizes the rich history of Lloyd's and it's a wonder to see in person," said Mary Catherine.
