The North America Office of Duesseldorf Tourism and Duesseldorf Airport Announce: Major Art Awards for Two Duesseldorf Artists: Mischa Kuball and Guenther Uecker
Düsseldorf, Germany (PRWEB) October 30, 2015 -- Düsseldorf is well known as a major art center and birth place of some of the biggest names in classic and contemporary arts. Two Düsseldorf-born artists, Mischa Kuball and Günther Uecker, are the recipients of major German art awards. Kuball will receive the German Light Art Award 2016, an award given by the Robert Simon Art Foundation and endowed with 10,000 euros. The ceremony will be held in January at the Art Museum Celle (which houses one of the largest light art collections in Germany). Uecker received the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia) State Award, endowed with 25,000 euros, on October 22 in Düsseldorf. This award honors extraordinary accomplishments by people from or connected to the state and is given to Uecker for his life’s work in art and his immense influence on generations of young artists and on post-WW2 contemporary art in general.
Mischa Kuball was born in 1959 in Düsseldorf and has been creating his light art in public and institutional spaces since 1984. He was a visiting professor, working on the subject of light and space, at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig in 1999-2000 and from 2004 – 2008 taught media art at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe. He has been a professor of media art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne since 2007. His light installations explore and express the social and political dimensions of lighting as an art medium.
Günther Uecker’s career spans more than five decades and exhibits a wide range of ingenuity in artistic expression, from political expression to zen-inducing objects. Some of his innovative styles made him famous, especially relief-like images created from nails, and kinetic installations. Uecker, born 1930 in Düsseldorf, was also a member of the ZERO movement, a Düsseldorf-based group of artists. The group produced art from 1958 through 1966 with the intention to liberate art from the limitations of the past, especially the depression and darkness of WWII, and from this create a new and more carefree and optimistic world through art. An exhibit of ZERO works was shown earlier in 2014 at New York City’s Guggenheim Museum.
