Carnegie Council Celebrates the Third Edition of "Ethics and Statecraft: The Moral Dimension of International Affairs," October 2015
(PRWEB) October 30, 2015 -- The third edition of "Ethics and Statecraft: The Moral Dimension of International Affairs," edited by Cathal J. Nolan and published by Praeger, just came out in October 2015. It is also available as an e-book via http://publisher.abc-clio.com.
This collection of essays uses challenging cases from modern history to illuminate the most pressing moral question facing decision-makers today: how to reconcile competing claims of national security, human rights, and the use of force.
Written by a group of international scholars, it provides clear, non-partisan, and non-ideological scholarly coverage of historical as well as contemporary moral issues in international affairs. The topics range from diplomacy, military decision-making, and international law to humanitarian intervention and the definition and protection of the basic human rights.

Back in 1993, the Council sponsored an international conference at the University of Vancouver on biography, ethics, and statecraft. The conference framework was based on the existing structure and essays of this book, which was already under commission. The lively debates at the conference greatly contributed to the book, highlighting themes that appear in nearly all of the essays.
