Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Managing Partner of North Shore Eye Care, To Speak On Exceptional Technology of Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery At Upcoming AAO Academy Meeting
Smithtown, NY (PRWEB) November 02, 2015 -- Long Island eye surgeon, Jeffrey Martin, MD, will speak at the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s annual meeting taking place November 14-17, 2015 in Las Vegas, NV. During an exclusive sidebar session on November 14, Clinical Leadership Meets Practice Growth, Dr. Martin will discuss the benefits of using the CATALYS Precision Laser System on patients undergoing laser cataract surgery. Developed by Abbott Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO), the CATALYS Precision Laser is superior to conventional methods since it allows surgeons to create laser-precise incisions based on each patient’s unique eye size and shape, resulting in safer and more precise incisions.
In recent years, cataract surgery has experienced numerous advancements, but Dr. Martin firmly believes CATALYS technology is one of the most significant. “Never before have we been able to achieve such optimal vision in our post-cataract patients so safely and accurately. Many of the steps of cataract surgery traditionally performed using handheld instruments can now be completed using the precision of a laser, thereby significantly reducing complications and adverse reactions, such as dry eye and inflammation,” states Dr. Martin.
The success behind CATALYS technology is the 600 femtosecond laser combined with a gentle Liquid Optics docking interface along with an integrated 3D Full Volume Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) image-guidance system. The interface is designed to provide a stable, gentle dock and a clear optical path for the OCT and laser. The system visualizes ocular surfaces and algorithms process the image and automatically and accurately map eye surfaces while creating safety zones. After a treatment plan has been customized based on the patient’s ocular anatomy, the femtosecond laser pulses are delivered precisely to their intended location. The laser breaks up the cataract lens making it easier to remove and precise incisions allow for implantation of the new intraocular lens. “Another advantage to laser cataract surgery is that there is no need for shots, stitches or patches, which improves the patient experience dramatically,” says Dr. Martin.
“Well over a thousand North Shore Eye Care patients have benefitted from the CATALYS system even though we’ve only had access to it since January 2014,” adds Dr. Martin. This outstanding technology results in customized surgeries that are more gentle, safe and accurate.
AMO’s CATALYS Precision Laser System was developed in close collaboration with a medical advisory board of cataract experts from around the world. In 2012, the CATALYS System was recognized as one of the top 100 technological innovations in the world.
