September Employment Increases by 4.4 Percent Over August
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) October 30, 2015 -- The Economic Situation report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday, October 2, revealed a growth of 142,000 jobs for the month of September, a increase of 6,000 jobs over August’s monthly employment growth.
September’s job growth marks a 4.4 percent increase over August’s revised employment number of 136,000 jobs, and a 43.2 percent decrease from last year’s growth of 250,000 jobs in September 2014. Last month, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.1 percent, while the number of unemployed persons dropped to 7.9 million from 8 million the month before. Over the year, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons were down by 0.8 percentage point and 1.32 million, respectively.
For the month of September, job gains primarily occurred in health care and information, while mining employment continued to fall.
Health care added 34,000 jobs in September, in line with the average increase of 38,000 jobs per month over the prior 12 months. Job gains primarily occurred within hospitals and ambulatory health care services, which accounted for 16,000 and 13,000 jobs respectively.
Employment in information increased by 12,000 in September and has increased by 44,000 over the year.
Mining employment continued to decline in September, dropping 1.34 percent or 10,000 jobs. While losses occurred within each subsector, they were concentrated in support activities for mining which lost 7,000 jobs. Employment in the mining supersector has declined by 102,000 jobs since reaching a peak in December 2014.
Employment in other major industries, including construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, financial activities, and government, showed little or no change over the month.
After revisions, total nonfarm payroll employment for the month of July and August were revised from 245,000 to 223,000 jobs and 173,000 to 136,000 jobs, respectively. With these revisions, employment gains in July and August combined were 59,000 less than previously reported. Over the past 3 months, job gains have averaged 167,000 per month.
