La Mirada, CA (PRWEB) October 30, 2015 -- Healthpointe is proud to announce that bariatric surgeon Dr. Rendon is now providing sleeve gastrectomy, a weight loss procedure for patients struggling with high BMIs, obesity, and related complications such as diabetes and heart disease.
Sleeve gastrectomy (vertical sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) is a procedure in which the stomach size is reduced to the shape of a tube (sleeve). Its purpose is to limit the amount of food your stomach can absorb, before feeling full. This results in lower caloric intake, which leads to weight loss.
Unlike a gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy does not affect how food passes from the stomach to the small intestine – it simply reduces the size of the stomach. Additionally, Ghrelin, the hormone that triggers appetite and hunger, is mostly removed during surgery. As a result, patients have significantly less hunger than they did prior to the surgery.
Patients who undergo a sleeve gastrectomy will be given general anesthesia. A sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally-invasive laparoscopy. This means the operation involves only a few very small incisions. Weight management surgeries like sleeve gastrectomy is performed with the help of a tiny video camera. About 75% of the stomach is removed, leaving only the “tube” or “sleeve” portion. The remaining stomach is then held together using sutures or staples. The surgery usually lasts about an hour to an hour and a half, depending the patient. The average size of the stomach after surgery is reported to be about 150 mL.
