Granite Shoals Police Chief, JP Wilson, formally announced his Republican candidacy for Burnet County Sheriff in the 2016 election. As police chief of Granite Shoals for more than 13 years, he is the only candidate running who has managed a community-based law enforcement agency.

As police chief of Granite Shoals for more than 13 years, he is the only candidate running who has managed a community-based law enforcement agency, which includes developing officer protocols and procedures, submitting and managing fiscal budgets, recruiting and hiring patrol and senior-level officers and working directly with citizens to foster strong ties and trust with the police.

In 2002, J.P. inherited a department that was the lowest paid, most under-equipped, and most under-trained department in Burnet County. Under his outstanding leadership, the Granite Shoals Police Department is now one of the highest paid, best-equipped and best-trained departments in the county. It was just recognized for “Best Practices” by the Texas Police Chief’s Association – the first and only law enforcement agency in Burnet County to receive this impressive accolade.

J.P. holds a Master Peace Officer Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). He is currently enrolled in the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership Command College, a nationally recognized police leadership program, and will graduate in 2016. JP is a fiscal conservative who respects the hard-working tax payers of Burnet County and knows how to squeeze the most out of limited budgets. His vision is to bring professional, performance-driven law enforcement to the citizens of Burnet County.

Some of J.P.’s many goals for the sheriff’s office include:

  • Conducting a comprehensive review of all processes in place at the sheriff’s office to determine areas where service to the public can be improved (within the first 100 days in office)
  • Increasing cooperation between all area law enforcement agencies to provide better service to citizens
  • Holding employees accountable for their performance and actions
  • Implementing new security procedures and protocols for the county jail
  • Increasing training for jail staff, which will promote a more secure facility
  • Reorganizing the patrol division to have more deputies on the streets and neighborhoods - allowing for a faster response to calls for service
  • Creating a sex offender registration unit that will aggressively monitor sex offenders residing in Burnet County
  • Establishing new procedures to ensure timely and professional follow-up investigations of crimes
  • Implementing a consolidated, county-wide emergency communication center for faster, more efficient, and more professional emergency communications

J.P. and his wife Angela (a Burnet County Sheriff’s Deputy) have been residents of Burnet County since 2002. They have one son, Jake, who graduated from Marble Falls High School and is attending Texas State University. J.P. is very active with the community in Burnet County. He is a member of the board of directors for Highland Lakes CASA, has volunteered countless hours supporting the Granite Shoals Christmas Outreach - even putting on the Santa Claus suit to handout toys to children. He has also served on the city council for the City of Meadowlakes.
