Abbott Medical Optics Films Long Island Surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Martin Performing Latest Breakthroughs In Cataract Surgery & Lens Implant Design
Smithtown, New York (PRWEB) November 06, 2015 -- In an effort to showcase their latest breakthroughs in laser and lens implant technology to surgeons around the world, ophthalmic industry leader Abbott Medical Optics Inc. (AMO) announced that they will film Long Island eye surgeon Jeffrey L. Martin, MD today performing laser cataract surgery with their Catalys Precision Laser System and implanting advanced cataract lens implants designed to correct astigmatism during surgery and reduce or eliminate patients’ depending on prescription glasses after surgery.
“For decades, North Shore Eye Care has helped set the standard in cataract care not only for patients here on Long Island but for patients and doctors across the country,” said Dr. Martin. “Having one of world’s leading ophthalmic and pharmaceutical companies asking me to share my expertise in the operating room with my colleagues around the world is both humbling and rewarding in knowing that our efforts to serve as a cataract Center of Excellence have not gone unnoticed.”
AMO is a leader in vision care with a long history of innovation and market-leading vision correction technologies. They are currently ranked in the TOP 3 in the world for vision care products for cataract patients, LASIK patients and eye care solutions. Their products and services address a wide range of vision disorders and meet the needs of patients who seek greater freedom from the limitations of eyeglasses. Products in their ophthalmic surgical line include intraocular lenses, laser vision correction systems, phacoemulsification systems, viscoelastics, microkeratomes and related products used in cataract and refractive surgery. AMO is based in Santa Ana, California, and employs approximately 4,200 worldwide. The company has operations in 24 countries and markets products in approximately 60 countries.
“All of the doctors and staff at North Shore Eye Care strive to provide our patients the highest quality personal care and to do our absolute best to ensure optimal outcomes,” said Dr. Martin. “So I am honored once again to be recognized for our efforts in the field of cataract care and to be included in AMO’s efforts to further advance their breakthrough laser and lens implant technology.”
Today, Dr. Martin will be filmed by AMO while he performs laser cataract surgery using the Catalys Precision Laser System. The Catalys combines a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser, advanced 3D Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging, sophisticated software and a host of other unique features that allow the surgeons of North Shore Eye Care to provide patients a gentle, highly customized cataract surgery with unprecedented precision and accuracy.
“This femtosecond laser technology allows us to take an already safe procedure and make it even better by adding a new level of precision and predictability that is simply not possible with traditional manual cataract surgery,” said Dr. Martin. “It is also helping us take advanced cataract surgery from an art form to a truly digital science.” In addition, the Catalys laser’s advanced technology makes break-up and removal of the cataract easier and gentler on the patient.
Dr. Martin will also be filmed implanting AMO’s line of premium Intraocular Lens Implants (IOLs) as well as utilizing Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) technology. AMO’s line of premium lenses include the Tecnis multifocal IOL and the Tecnis Toric IOL that are designed to reduce or eliminate a patient’s need for prescription glasses following cataract surgery. “Our new-technology IOLs have tremendous potential for patients who want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on prescription eyewear after cataract surgery,” he said. “But not every patient is an ideal candidate. My colleagues need to be aware of the patient parameters we look for in the cataract lens selection process. Patients with pre-existing eye disease or pathology are probably not the most ideal candidates for new-technology lenses,” he said.
ORA technology gives cataract surgeons like Dr. Martin the on-demand capability to correct astigmatism, measure outcomes and verify lens implant calculations in real time during cataract surgery. “Having the capability to measure, refine and affirm our outcomes during the actual surgical process is cataract surgery to an entirely new level. Making real-time surgical course correction with on-demand measurements of the most critical components of cataract care enhances our outcomes and reduces potential post-op complications.”
Dr. Martin was selected by AMO to be filmed performing Femtosecond laser cataract surgery and implanting premium lens implant technology because of his vast experience in the field of cataract removal and lens implantation. Dr. Martin has also been active guest speaker and lecturer for AMO in the past 2 years at most of the world’s largest ophthalmic meetings.
Dr. Martin and North Shore Eye Care were the first practitioners on Long Island to offer cataract patients the benefits of the CATALYS Femtosecond laser cataract system. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery using the Catalys Precision Laser System offers a reproducible, noninvasive technique to replace the least predictable - and most technically demanding - steps for surgeons during conventional cataract procedures.
