The American Kidney Fund has been awarded the “highest, 4-star” evaluation for sound fiscal management by Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity evaluator, for the 14th consecutive year for demonstrating ongoing fiscal excellence. AKF spends 97 cents of every dollar on patients and programs, and is listed in Charity Navigator’s Top 10 listing for “Charities with the Most Consecutive 4-Star Ratings.”
Charity Navigator evaluates the financial health, accountability and transparency of America's largest charities. The organization evaluates more than 8,000 U.S. charities each year.
“Less than 1 percent of the charities we rate have received at least 14 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that [the] American Kidney Fund outperforms most other charities in America,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates [the] American Kidney Fund from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
“This 14th consecutive 4-star designation highlights our commitment to executing our mission in a fiscally responsible way,” said LaVarne A. Burton, president and CEO of the American Kidney Fund. “Every day we focus on delivering our programs and services in the most efficient way possible, ensuring that we can continue leading the nation in providing financial assistance to dialysis patients in need and reaching patients at risk for kidney disease to help them prevent it. We are deeply grateful to our contributors, and we will remain committed to the efficient, ethical and transparent use of their donated dollars.”
Charity Navigator's rating system examines two broad areas of a charity's performance: its financial health, and its accountability and transparency. Ratings show givers how efficiently Charity Navigator believes a charity will use their support today, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time, and its level of commitment to good governance, best practices and openness with information.
About the American Kidney Fund
The American Kidney Fund is dedicated to ensuring that every kidney patient has access to health care, and that every person at risk for kidney disease is empowered to prevent it. As the nation’s largest not-for-profit organization serving people with chronic kidney disease, AKF has helped more than 1 million low-income dialysis patients to access lifesaving medical care since the organization’s founding in 1971. Last year, AKF helped 1 in 5 of the nation’s dialysis patients pay for their treatment-related expenses, providing grants to more than 84,000 people in all 50 states. Thirty-one million Americans are living with kidney disease, and 1 in 3 are at risk. To address this enormous public health threat, AKF provides many vital programs and services, including public and professional health education materials and courses, the Kidney Action Day® community outreach program, a nationwide Advocacy Network, the KIDNEYNATION(TM) grassroots fundraising platform, and a toll-free health information HelpLine (866.300.2900). AKF depends on the generosity of the American public to carry out its mission.
