DuPont and Entomol Products, LLC have signed a commercial license agreement that enables Entomol, pending required governmental registrations, to make and sell formulations using DuPont’s hydrogenated catmint oil (HCO) technology. DuPont HCO is a nature-based insect repellent ingredient derived from the catmint (Nepeta cataria) plant.

“HCO is an innovative, bio-based insect repellent that can help people live healthier lives by protecting them from insects that can transmit disease,” said Senior Vice President and Chief Science & Technology Officer Douglas Muzyka. “We are pleased to work with Entomol to bring this exciting new ingredient to market.”

Entomol Chief Executive Officer Mark Sloneker said, “Entomol is thrilled to be working with DuPont to commercialize this breakthrough product. We plan to bring to market a nature-based, EPA-registered insect repellent that is as effective as synthetic chemicals. An effective nature-based insect repellent benefits everyone along the supply chain, from growers to consumers, and has the potential to change the industry.”

Under the agreement, Entomol receives a commercial license to DuPont HCO patents, knowledge and commercial formulations for the manufacture of topical HCO insect repellents. The active HCO ingredient, as well as repellant formulations composed of HCO, have been registered by DuPont with EPA.

Topically applied formulations of DuPont HCO have been demonstrated to be effective for hours in deterring insects such as mosquitoes that can transmit diseases such as yellow fever and malaria.

While DuPont has obtained EPA registrations for formulations containing the active HCO ingredient, Entomol is in the process of seeking EPA and state registrations for its own, branded products containing HCO. No sale, offer for sale, use or promotion of any Entomol-branded products is permitted until all necessary EPA and state registrations have been obtained.
