The new Somis School campus will provide a safe and modern learning environment for our students, in addition to supporting the school’s innovative STEAM educational programming.

Somis Union School District has launched SupportSomisSchool.com, a website designed to support fundraising initiatives for the design and construction of a new campus for Somis Union Elementary School in Somis, California.

In addition to offering visitors an easy and efficient way to donate money to the school, the website will also serve as the primary source for news, information and updates on the construction of the new campus.

A 2012 risk assessment performed by Terraphase Engineering determined that nearby aging gas lines posed an unacceptable risk to students, staff and faculty. Because Somis Union School District could not afford to move the gas lines, which run in front of the elementary school on North Street, as well as beneath the school’s playground, the decision to relocate the school was made. The district has entered escrow on a 10-acre property that will meet today’s construction regulations and safety standards.

“This school has been a part of the Somis community for more than 120 years and we developed the website to keep our community involved in this process,” said Dr. Colleen Robertson, Superintendent of Somis Union School District. “The safety and well-being of our students, staff and families is of the utmost importance to the district. The new Somis School campus will provide a safe and modern learning environment for our students, in addition to supporting the school’s innovative STEAM curriculum.”

Somis Union School District has a percentage of the necessary funds through a $9 million bond passed by local voters in November 2012 for the creation of an up-to-date school. The district also has a conditional commitment from the state for additional resources. However, it is estimated that the district will need an additional $10 million to build the adequate infrastructure and programming necessary to support Somis School’s STEAM education focus.
