Renewable sources of energy, saving energy in communities, and making energy efficiency a lesson for citizens is fundamental in shaping a new generation of sustainable development leaders in the Caribbean. Recognizing an opportunity to not only explore advancements in sustainable energy, but to provide valuable professional development opportunities for the community as well, the CARICOM Energy Unit, in partnership with Atlanta-based technology company trInnovation Labs, is sponsoring an Energy App Development Challenge that will launch during CARICOM Energy Week 2015.
Open to all Caribbean Nationals and persons of Caribbean descent in the diaspora, the Energy App Development Challenge calls on all programmers, developers, entrepreneurs and enthusiasts across the Caribbean and the diaspora to generate innovative concepts that lead to functional technology applications that address behaviors with regards to sustainable energy use. In April 2008, the CARICOM Secretariat commenced the Energy Programme as one of the programmes within the Directorate of Trade and Economic Integration. The Energy Programme was assigned the responsibility of implementing a programmatic approach to energy sector developments in the Region. This established a departure from the traditional “project approach” and aims to facilitate greater responsiveness in carrying out the Community’s energy related mandates as well as fostering a harmonized approach to the region’s energy issues. The Energy Programme is executed by the Energy Unit of the CARICOM Secretariat and has responsibility for policies, strategies and coordination on Regional energy matters.
