Attendees of I/ITSEC 2015 will be able to use military and civilian simulations as well as an intelligent tutor developed by SIMmersion. In addition to their exhibit in the South Concourse of the Orange County Convention Center, Dr. Dale Olsen, CEO of SIMmersion, will present the paper “Virtual Interview Training Increases Job Offers for Veterans and Others.”

I/ITSEC is always a great opportunity for us to demonstrate to the modeling and simulation community what makes us unique

From Monday, November 30, to Thursday, December 3, SIMmersion will demonstrate PeopleSim® technology and a prototype Intelligent Tutor at the 2015 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Florida, the world's largest modeling, simulation and training conference. The Conference, which traces its roots back to 1966, is an annual event organized by the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA), an affiliate subsidiary of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA).

This year’s Conference theme is “Forging the Future through Innovation.” Due to the NIDA affiliation, the Conference attracts a substantial contingent of defense and security personnel and vendors of related technologies. According to reports, there will be a record number of General/Flag/SES Officer events and participants this year. The Conference promotes international and interdisciplinary cooperation among fields and disciplines that are particularly relevant to SIMmersion, including training, education and analysis as well as modeling and simulation.

PeopleSim® technology was first introduced at the 1998 I/ITSEC. In 2002, Dr. Dale Olsen, CEO of SIMmersion, left the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) to form SIMmersion. Since then, most of SIMmersion’s business has come from contacts made at the I/ITSEC Conference. In the past, SIMmersion has frequently enjoyed extended visits with General/Flag/SES Officers at its booth on the expo floor, where passers-by can play their simulations live. This year, SIMmersion will demonstrate new systems, a few of its existing systems and a prototype intelligent tutor.

SIMmersion’s PeopleSim® technology allows users to talk with virtual characters who have memory and dynamic emotions so that they respond as real people would. These nearly free-form conversations can be as extensive as necessary and are different every time. Users receive feedback in a variety of ways, including help from an on-screen coach and a comprehensive after-action review.

SIMmersion will demonstrate two military systems. In “Locally Employed Personnel Screening,” an Afghan local seeks a job at a forward operating base. In “Walk-In Interview,” a local doctor says he has information about militants operating near the base. All attendees can practice coaching an employee while at the same time improving morale in “Coaching for Improved Performance” or interrogating a suspect in a criminal investigation in “Hands-on Interview and Interrogation Training System (HIITS).”

In addition to the simulations demonstrated at the Conference, SIMmersion has developed a wide range of products for military and government clients as well as doctors, businesses and consumers. For example, doctors can access SIMmersion’s technology online, for free, to practice talking to a virtual patient in “Talking to Patients about Health Risk Behaviors.” Sales professionals can learn how to leverage influencing principles to improve their performance by using “Supportive Selling with Dan Williams,” a powerful and popular sales training tool.

Studies are showing SIMmersion’s products have a profound training effect. Researchers from Yale and Northwestern University found that training with SIMmersion’s virtual human resources manager in “Job Interview Training with Molly Porter” made study participants eight to nine times more likely to receive a job offer within six months. Dr. Dale Olsen, CEO of SIMmersion, will present the paper examining the study and its results at the Conference.

There is no limit to the range of topics for training SIMmersion’s immersive simulations can provide. SIMmersion’s Non-Branching Logic™ provides a dynamic, unpredictable and realistic learning experience, forcing the learner to think about what has happened and what they should do next, as opposed to the multiple-choice experience typical to most simulations. To demonstrate a non-conversational application of SIMmersion’s Non-Branching Logic™, their prototype intelligent tutor assists users of a memory game, providing hints and other support if needed to help users remember a sequence.

SIMmersion is scheduling meetings with partner companies during the Conference. “I/ITSEC is always a great opportunity for us to demonstrate to the modeling and simulation community what makes us unique,” says Dr. Olsen. “We’re looking forward to the connections this year will bring, and to another year of growth like what we’ve experienced in 2015.”
