Data analytics project is highly commended at UK IT Industry Awards
Oxford, Oxfordshire (PRWEB UK) 19 November 2015 -- Big data, analytics and software experts Tessella and the ISIS neutron source at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory have been highly commended in the Not for Profit category at this year’s UK IT Industry Awards, for their work on open source software framework Mantid.
The annual awards, which took place on the 18th November at Battersea Park Arena, London, celebrate the contribution of individuals, projects, organisations and technologies that have excelled in the use, development and deployment of IT in the past 12 months.
Mantid is an international collaboration led by the ISIS neutron source in Oxfordshire, one of the national scientific research laboratories in the UK operated by STFC.
Mantid is an extendible open source data reduction and analysis framework allowing analysis, manipulation and visualisation of data collected from neutron scattering experiments – a scientific technique used to better understand biological and physical materials. It eliminates work duplication and enables scientists to focus on science, not software, and is being increasingly used by global research sites around the world, becoming a standard tool for data analysis.
David Whittle, Government, Space and Defence Sector Director at Tessella, said: “Industries are constantly changing as technology develops and new discoveries and ways of working come to life, and the science community is not exempt from this. We’re proud to have worked with STFC to create something that would aid scientists and allow them to put their efforts into their research, and not have to focus on ensuring the software they are using is compatible."
Professor Robert McGreevy, Director of the STFC ISIS Neutron Source said, “We are delighted that Mantid is receiving both recognition within the science community and in the technology sector. Being Highly Commended in these national awards is a wonderful acknowledgement by our peers of the hard work put in by everyone at STFC, Tessella and our international collaborators to create software that is now used by thousands of scientists worldwide.”
Paul Fletcher, Group CEO of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, said: “Congratulations to all the winners and those who were highly commended in our UK IT Industry 2015 Awards. BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, is here to make IT good for society. The Awards are a major part of this, demonstrating how excellence is being achieved across the IT profession. This year the calibre of applications we received was outstanding, but the winners stood out as exceptional and inspiring, and they should be very proud of their success.”
