CSU-Global Receives Grant to Help Credential Rural K-12 Colorado Teachers
Greenwood Village, Colo. (PRWEB) November 24, 2015 -- Colorado State University-Global Campus is proud to announce a new joint initiative to address the critical need for teacher credentialing in rural Colorado. As part of the Colorado Rural Education Collaborative (CREC), CSU-Global will develop and offer courses to help teachers in the fields of math and English become qualified for concurrent enrollment programs thanks to federal grant funding.
“Due to teacher credentialing requirements, Rural Colorado K-12 school districts are challenged in the type and number of dual enrollment courses that their high school students can be enrolled in,” explained Dr. Becky Takeda-Tinker, President of Colorado State University-Global Campus. “We are excited to be able to provide a solution that can help bridge that gap through our high quality and flexible online teacher development programs.”
Through a partnership of the Santa Fe Trail Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (SFTBOCES), Otero Junior College, Generation Schools Network, and Battelle for Kids, the approved grant proposal consists of establishing a pilot program in rural schools. This includes providing scholarships for eligible teachers in the SFTBOCES districts to get the necessary credentials to teach concurrent enrollment programs, which allow students to earn college credits while still in high school.
The project’s proposal was approved by a committee of Colorado Department of Higher Education and Colorado Department of Education members as part of the 2015-2016 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), Improving Teacher Quality, Title II, Part A federal grant. Grants were awarded for teacher preparation initiatives around the state. In addition to Colorado State University-Global Campus, Western State Colorado University and CSU-Global’s sister institution of Colorado State University-Pueblo received grant funding.
“We anticipate this program will increase the number of concurrent enrollment qualified educators in the SFTBOCES area by more than 50 percent,” continued Dr. Takeda-Tinker. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to fulfill our mission through this and similar collaborative efforts that focus on advancing student success in Colorado.”
In addition to the grant project, CSU-Global is working with Generation Schools Network and Battelle for Kids on a new Turnaround Leadership Program. Launching in March, this 3-year program is designed to help schools dramatically improve performance through training, coaching, resources, and support. While separate initiatives, these collaborative efforts—as well as the university’s new Teacher Licensure programs—demonstrate how CSU-Global is embracing its role as a leader in driving Colorado education forward.
