High Country Gardens Wins 2016 Green Thumb Awards
Williston, VT (PRWEB) November 30, 2015 -- High Country Gardens, the industry’s pioneer in sustainable gardening, has won two 2016 Green Thumb Awards, recognized by the Direct Gardening Association (DGA) for excellence in its field. After careful review by an independent panel of garden writers and editors, Sorghastrum nutans ‘Thin Man’ and Penstemon pinifolius ‘Luminous’ were each selected as outstanding new garden products.
High Country Gardens innovation in developing habitat-friendly and drought resistant plants earned the gardening company two out of the five spots available in the DGA’s Plants, Bulbs, and Seeds category.
In recent years, with drought afflicting more and more gardeners, High Country Gardens has continued its commitment to waterwise gardening by introducing new varieties of hardy, xeric plants that thrive under tough growing conditions, including Thin Man and Luminous.
"From the start more than twenty years ago, we have focused on offering our customers the best new, and tried-and-true ornamental plants to help them create beautiful, resilient gardens and landscapes," said David Salman, founder of High Country Gardens. "It's a great feeling to have two of our 2016 introductions recognized by the DGA by winning the Green Thumb award."
Sorghastrum nutans ‘Thin Man’ is a fantastic addition to almost any large garden. A selected form of native Indian Grass, 'Thin Man' has very blue foliage and a narrow, very upright growing habit to the leaves and flower spikes, with a mature height of around 6 feet. Blooming in late summer, the attractive bronze-colored flowers produce lots of big seeds for songbirds. Available in 5-inch deep pots, ‘Thin Man’ is well-suited for zones 4-9 and retails for $12.99.
Chosen and named for its vibrant, light orange-yellow flowers, Penstemon pinifolius ‘Luminous’ matures to a flowering height of 8-10 inches and produces short, multi-flowered spikes. Thriving in lean, fast draining soils, this plant is drought-resistant once established and produces its brightest blooms in late spring. Sold in 5-inch deep pots, ‘Luminous’ is best suited for zones 5-9 and is available for $10.99.
The Direct Gardening Association is the world’s largest non-profit association of companies that sell garden products directly to consumers. The annual Green Thumb Awards honor the year’s best new garden products available by mail or online. Winning products are chosen for their uniqueness, technological innovation, ability to solve a gardening problem or provide a gardening opportunity, and potential appeal to gardeners.
