Bronx community advocates hand out record number of Thanksgiving meals to Bronx families in-need

Hundreds of Bronx families have one more thing to be grateful for this year thanks to the Gardiner Foundation and On Saturday, November 21, The Gardiner Foundation and hosted the 6th Annual Gardiner Memorial Turkey Giveaway at St. James Park in the Bronx, New York. This was the biggest giveaway to date, with turkeys and fixings handed out to 600 Bronx families.

“This turkey is a blessing,” explained Sarah, a lifelong Bronx resident.“Being a single grandmother who has become disabled, I'm doing my very best to raise my grandson to be a respectful man who is appreciative and thankful, even though we don't have much.”

The event also drew a larger-than-ever number of volunteers, including basketball teams from Long Island high schools, Oyster Bay and Freeport. Police officers from the 52nd precinct also lent a hand, passing out turkeys and blocking off 193rd Street near the entrance of St. James Park, so families could line up and receive their turkeys safely.

Sherri and Dexter Gardiner were presented with official Citations from Councilman Fernando Cabrera’s office on behalf of the City, recognizing all of the work the Gardiner Foundation does for the community.

“Many of us take our Thanksgiving turkeys for granted, but for a lot of these families here today, this event is the difference between having a Thanksgiving or no Thanksgiving at all,” said Jeff Korek, partner at “We are thrilled to support such a wonderful event that helps so many members of our community.”

The Gardiner Foundation and are already planning next year's Memorial Basketball Tournament and Turkey Giveaway, along with some new projects including a Christmas Toy Drive. The Gardiner Foundation accepts donations year-round which will go towards scholarships, the Foundation’s Tru-Talk Program, Memorial Basketball Tournament, Turkey Giveaway, and mentoring trips.
