November was the National Family Caregivers Month, and the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation acknowledged it by providing webinars and information for family members caring for mesothelioma patients.

With a loved one's diagnosis of mesothelioma, the closest family member is often catapulted into the new role of caregiver. A caregiver, by definition, is an unpaid family member or friend that provides medical and emotional support to a patient.

During the National Family Caregivers Month, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) released information for caregivers and held two webinars on topics of ‘Medical and Palliative Care Decisions,’ and ‘Self-Care for Caregivers.’ Both webinars are available on demand free of charge at http://www.curemeso.org/caregivers.

With a loved one's diagnosis of mesothelioma, the closest family member is often catapulted into the new role of caregiver. A caregiver, by definition, is an unpaid family member or friend that provides medical and emotional support to a patient.

These tasks are time-consuming and often physically and emotionally demanding. They easily interfere with the caregiver's own life and work, and as a result can take a toll on the caregiver. However, research shows that caregivers who take care of their own needs and get the information, help, and support they require are better prepared to take care of their loved ones.

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. With the life expectancy of less than one year after diagnosis, medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive and deadly of all cancers. An estimated one-third of those who develop mesothelioma were exposed while serving in the Navy or working in shipyards. Currently, few treatment options exist. There is no cure.
