SAE International Honors Doctoral Student Josh Goldschmid with Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology Award
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) December 03, 2015 -- Josh Goldschmid, a PhD candidate at Missouri University of Science and Technology, was honored with the Steven M. Atkins Ability and Achievement in Science, Engineering, and Technology (AASET) Award during the SAE International AeroTech Engineering Congress held recently in Seattle.
Established in 2011, the award recognizes the significant technical achievements brought about by innovation, leadership and inspiration of employees with disabilities working in the aerospace engineering industry. It also demonstrates the deeper scope and reach of SAE International to mobility engineering professionals. The award also was established to recognize aerospace employees with disabilities who, through their technical achievements, innovation, leadership and inspiration, have contributed to the aerospace industry. The award was enabled by a contribution from The Boeing Company to honor Steven M. Atkins, Vice President, Product Integrity and Functional Excellence, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
Mr. Goldschmid earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biological Systems Engineering from the University of California, Davis; and his Master’s degree in Engineering Management from Drexel University.
He began working at Boeing in 2005 as a Technical Specialist for 787 wingbox design & testing processing test data for analysis and publication. In the following years he worked on many airplane projects making significant contributions in design, certification, and program management for Boeing Commercial airplanes including the 737, 747, 767, 777, and 787.
In 2014, he became a Boeing Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) Doctoral Fellow and assisted Boeing and industries in the transformation of systems engineering by creating innovative methods, processes and tools that address critical challenges. In June 2015, he was selected to become a Technical Liaison representing the Boeing Company to help form STEM-related strategic alliances with the United States Business Leadership Network (USBLN) in leveraging disability inclusion in the workplace, supply chain, and marketplace.
Mr. Goldschmid’s growth and achievements have been made despite his profound (95+dB) deafness since birth which was caused by abnormalities in the hair cells of the organ of Corti in the cochlea. He did not have language speaking nor comprehension skills until he was eight years old and spoke the first word, "moon." At that time, medical professionals advised his parents that he would struggle to achieve a high school diploma and enter the white-collar working field with limited socialization. His deafness poses numerous challenges including language skill development and socialization, but using sign language interpreters and video relay services, he has successfully collaborated with engineers, managers, procurement agents, suppliers, and airline customers to solve complex technical and political issues in airplane certification and product development programs.
