Academy of Art University Congratulates Executive Director of Motion Pictures & Television on the Premier of His Documentary
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) December 03, 2015 -- James Egan, Academy of Art University’s Executive Director of Motion Pictures & Television is in New York City for the premier of “Sound of Redemption: The Frank Morgan Story,” a documentary he produced along with best-selling author Michael Connelly ("The Lincoln Lawyer" and TV series "Bosch").
The film tells the story of the exceptional life of Frank Morgan, the legendary jazz saxophonist who spent 30 years in prison and created a world-class music destination in San Quentin. Born in 1933, Morgan began playing very young and as a teenager had attracted the attention of jazz’s elite including Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Charlie Parker. Although considered by many the greatest alto saxophonist of his generation, his early introduction to the jazz scene also led to a life of drug addiction and crime from a young age. By 1962, Morgan was in San Quentin where he formed the San Quentin All-Stars, an all inmate 16-piece band who performed for paying visitors.
Egan was brought onto the project for his film production and motion picture storytelling expertise by executive producer Michael Connelly who had spent time with Morgan in 2007 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Morgan had wanted to work with Connelly to spread the message to young musicians about not taking the path he took. “This film has the message that he wanted to convey. It kind of finishes a promise I had with Frank,” says Connelly.
While in New York to attend the premier at the IFC Theater, Egan will also be working on his current project “Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins,” a documentary he is producing in association with Robert Redford’s Sundance Productions.
