Milton Hershey School Produces Special Program about Educating Children from Poverty
HERSHEY, Pa. (PRWEB) December 07, 2015 -- Milton Hershey School® produced a special half-hour television program, Success Starts Here, which features students, staff, alumni and parents who have achieved success in their lives with the help of the school.
“Our students are given opportunities to create a better life for themselves. We provide the tools to do that, but it’s up to them to take advantage of it and lead a fulfilling and productive life,” MHS President Pete Gurt ’85 said. “We have proof of that success among our nearly 10,000 alumni, who are accomplished professionals and active contributors in their communities.”
Topics highlighted in the program include social and emotional learning; top-notch academics with an emphasis on STEAM, technology, and hands-on learning opportunities for children from circumstances of poverty; career/technical education; and postgraduate supports.
The journey of current Seattle Seahawk and MHS graduate Garry Gilliam’09 is one of the stories highlighted in the program. Gilliam’s mother enrolled him at MHS when he was 7 years old. He thrived academically and athletically and earned a full scholarship to play football at Penn State. He is currently a starting offensive lineman in the NFL.
“Milton Hershey School helped me to focus on the right things—academics and sports. I got my life in line,” Gilliam said. “If you embrace the opportunities, it can definitely benefit anyone.
