SAE International Honors Three Mobility Engineering Professionals with Arch T. Colwell Award

SAE International announces that Guoqui He, PhD, of Tongji University; Qigui Wang, PhD, of General Motors and Yucong Wang, PhD, of General Motors are winners of the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award.

SAE International announces that Guoqui He, PhD, of Tongji University; Qigui Wang, PhD, of General Motors and Yucong Wang, PhD, of General Motors are winners of the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award.

The group is honored for authoring the technical paper, “Fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Alloys Under Multiaxial Loading” (2014-01-0972). They will receive the award during the SAE 2016 World Congress, which will be held April 12-14 in Detroit.

Established in 1965, Arch T. Colwell Merit Award annually recognizes the authors of papers of outstanding technical or professional merit presented an SAE International meeting or any of its sections during the calendar year. Papers are judged primarily for their value as new contributions to existing knowledge of mobility engineering. Mr. Colwell, who funded this award, served SAE International in many capacities for nearly 50 years, including a term as President in 1941. His own technical papers were outstanding examples of engineering excellence and clear writing.

Professor Guoqui He is Vice Director of Shanghai Key Lab for Metallic Functional Material Research and the Institute for Metal-based Material Research of Tongji University in China. He received his bachelors (1988), masters (1991) and PhD (1995) degrees in Solid Mechanics from Southwest Jiaotong University in China. He was a visiting scholar at Universität Kassel in Germany in 2005 and at Brown University in 2013. His research interest includes fatigue deformation and fracture of material, metallic functional and intellect materials and development of practical products. Dr. He received numerous awards including the 2nd
prize of national natural science and technology award, the 1st prize of progress in science and technology from Chengdu and the 3rd prize of progress in science and technology from Sichuan in China.

Dr. Qigui Wang, a Fellow of ASM International, is a Technical Specialist at General Motors Global Powertrain Engineering. After receiving his BS in 1982 in Metallurgy from Southeast University in China, he worked at the same university as a faculty member until 1992, obtaining his MS in 1987. Dr. Wang earned his PhD in 1997 in Materials Engineering from the University of Queensland in Australia. In past 30 years, Dr. Wang has developed strong expertise in numerous areas related to metal casting. He also has made distinguished and sustained contributions to the applied and theoretical understanding of fracture and fatigue of castings, and pioneering development of computational models linking processing, microstructure and properties in aluminum automotive powertrain components.

Dr. Yucong Wang is Manager for the Department of Advanced Materials, Products & Process Development in General Motors Global Powertrain Engineering. He leads GM Powertrain materials technical specialist team and advanced manufacturing engineering team. He has been working for GM in R&D, advanced manufacturing engineering, quality and product assurance as well as materials engineering since 1990. He received numerous honors and awards in his career, including Fellow of ASM (2004), honorary award from the U.S. Department of Energy as well as the highest technical honor in North American die-casting industry – the Herman H. Doehler Award (2005), and “Asian American Engineer of the Year” (2006), Boss-Kettering Award from GM (2015).
