First time a crocheted billboard has appeared in the heart of the famous advertising district

On December 1st, two crocheted billboards created by Brooklyn-based fiber artist London Kaye were installed at the corner of 7th avenue and 49th street in Manhattan’s famous Times Square neighborhood, and will be on display through December. With yarn provided by Lion Brand® Yarn Company, London Kaye and a crew of assisting artists and fiber-enthusiasts used over 300lbs of Vanna’s Choice® to crochet a billboard replicating the look of a holiday sweater. This is the first time a crocheted billboard has appeared in the heart of this famous advertising district.

Taking the team of artists a total of 250 hours to complete, the enormous piece reaches a height of 250 feet. All in all, the billboard is made up of a total of 300,000 stitches, and took over 400 industrial glue sticks to piece together.

This billboard sweater could not have been completed without some assistance, so London sourced a bevy of talented crocheters to help her create and complete the project. On behalf of London, Lion Brand® would like to thank the artists who made this project possible: Chase O’Donnell and Kaysie Kent, London’s sister and mother respectively, and artists: Stephanie Muschenheim, Rhiannon Platt, Bella Flores, Casey Saccomanno, and Jing N. Leong.

Stephanie, a knitter and crocheter for many years, was able to complete these pieces because of their portability, stating, “thankfully, I had a lot of time on my morning commute to devote to crocheting the background squares. It was definitely a challenge because we only had a few weeks to crochet the pieces before they needed to be sewn together, but London pulled it together beautifully. It was amazing working with her on this project; I can't wait to see what she's planning next."

Lion Brand® worked with London this past September on a community sourced yarn bomb in Union Square Park, and is also working with London Kaye and some fellow artists, including Casey Saccomanno, on a yarn bombing project to be unveiled at the craft industry’s CHA Winter Tradeshow in January, 2016.
