Social media presents a valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues and friends, but it also poses a challenge

To tweet or not to tweet? That is the question for professionals who enjoy online social media but want to avoid career-crashing pitfalls. Katherine Capps, president and founder of Washington, DC-based communications firm Health2 Resources, will present the fundamentals of social media communications at a pre-conference workshop for attendees of the Commission for Case Manager Certification's New World Symposium. The session will be offered Jan. 21, 2016, from 7:30 a.m. to noon, prior to the Symposium's opening.

With 1.49 billion active users worldwide, Facebook engages 47 percent of all Internet users. LinkedIn, the business-oriented social networking service, draws 28 percent of online adults. Social media is a digital marketing channel that businesses--and individual professionals--can't afford to ignore.

"Case managers are skilled communicators, trained to listen to patients and act with cultural sensitivity and compassion," Capps said. "Social media presents a valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues and friends, but it also poses a challenge: How can I be compelling and more effectively present myself professionally in the online world?"

Capps' session is part of a four-hour pre-conference workshop that examines case manager communication, ethics and professionalism. Current trends in communication, ethics, privacy and security that affect case management practice are among the session's topics. Participants will earn four continuing education credits by attending the full workshop.

"Individuals, just like companies, build their personal 'brand' via social media. It's essential that case managers learn how to do that without risking privacy concerns, and how they can enhance their careers with the right intelligence about what each channel offers for them."
