AIHM Fellowship Officially Recognized and Approved by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM)
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) December 22, 2015 -- The American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) committee unanimously approved the Interprofessional Fellowship in Integrative Health and Medicine of the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM or the Academy). The announcement confirms that medical doctors (MDs) and doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) who successfully complete the two-year training program are eligible to sit for the ABOIM board certification exam. The news affirms that the Academy’s 1,000-hour Fellowship, under the directorship of Tieraona Low Dog, MD, meets or exceeds the highest standards set forth for the study of Integrative Medicine.
The Interprofessional Fellowship is a new educational model that fosters collaboration amongst diverse practitioners and a team-based approach to healing, while delivering an integrative medical education that is transformative, academic, and experiential, as well as socially and environmentally responsible. The two-year executive delivery program allows clinicians to be in active practice while they study clinically relevant content material online, participate in in-person retreats and clinical rotations, and tailor their training with numerous elective modules in accordance with their professional interests.
According to AIHM President Mimi Guarneri, MD, “The AIHM Fellowship Program will provide a much-needed framework for a bold, paradigm-shifting approach to clinical practice and outcomes research. It will give rise to next-generation, interprofessional collaborations, and will activate fundamental, systemic change.”
Regarding the ABOIM committee’s unanimous approval of the AIHM Fellowship, Dr. Guarneri said, “I am thrilled that ABOIM now officially recognizes the training of Academy Fellows. It makes good sense. The ABOIM board was established to enable successful candidates to present themselves to the public as qualified specialists in the practice of Integrative Medicine. AIHM fellows will be extraordinarily well-trained in integrative, interprofessional medicine.”
While the ABOIM’s official approval is of great interest to MD and DO candidates, the endorsement elevates the entire program, which is distinctly interprofessional. “It is only by working together, in a spirit of mutual respect and collaboration, that we can start to build an integrative model of care, which may be our best hope for changing the trajectory of the health of our people and our planet,” said Dr. Low Dog.
“This important step for MDs and DOs is a positive development for the whole field of integrative health and medicine, as other professions consider developing their respective board certifications,” shared AIHM Associate Fellowship Director, Seroya Crouch, ND.
Eligible professions include: Medical Physicians, Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine, Naturopathic Physicians, Chiropractic Physicians, Physician Assistants, Advanced Practice Nurses, Licensed Acupuncturists, Registered Dietitians, Dentists, Pharmacists, Psychologists, Masters-prepared Registered Nurses and Direct Entry Midwives, and Licensed Clinical Social Workers.
The Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM) places a high value on social parity and is providing scholarships to highly qualified candidates.
The first AIHM Fellowship class begins Feb. 1, 2016 with an application deadline of January 9, 2016. Those interested are encouraged to apply as soon as possible at aihm.org/fellowship. Space is limited in order to facilitate the development of strong and intimate bonds among the cohort members and faculty members. The first class is almost full. Applications are also being accepted for the Fall 2016 Class.
