Afoundria, an Austin-based healthcare technology provider, is pleased to announce that its Co-Founder and Chief Medical Information Officer, Dr. Charles Owen, M.D., is now Board-Certified in Clinical Informatics, a subspecialty certification from the The American Board of Preventive Medicine representing the core competencies required of physicians who desire to optimize the use of information systems to improve healthcare. To date, less than 1,000 physicians have received the Board Certification in Clinical Informatics since the examination was first administered in October 2013.

With over 35 years of direct patient care experience in emergency medicine, Dr. Owen maintains an active practice at Heart Hospital of Austin (Austin, TX) and Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center (Waco, TX). Dr. Owen has a long history as a healthcare information technology entrepreneur tackling the clinical, operational and financial challenges facing our healthcare delivery system; including founding EmSTAT in 1988, a pioneer product in Emergency Department Information Systems that is still actively used today in emergency departments across the country.

“Since physicians are allegedly responsible for over 80% of healthcare delivery through their care, ordering and prescribing practices, it is is in our national interest to tackle the problem as it risks bankrupting our country and placing in jeopardy the health and well-being of all its citizens,” said Dr. Charles Owen, M.D., Afoundria Co-Founder and Chief Medical Information Officer. “To address this problem, we need better systems for collecting and analyzing clinical data and technology to implement the resulting care plans. This requires the participation of individuals who have extensive clinical knowledge and experience combined with a deep and rich education in systems thinking, information technology, and change management. Physicians who are Board-Certified in Clinical Informatics are that group.”

“To make major strides toward a humane and sustainable system of healthcare delivery, we must develop a point-of-decision infrastructure to guide and direct providers real-time in the care of their patients,” says Jon McBride, Afoundria Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer. “We often see physicians omitted from the technology and informatics health system decisions, yet (ironically) they are expected to adopt decision support and other technologies. Physicians who are Board-Certified in Clinical Informatics are the boots-on-the-ground and therefore well-equipped to inform decision-making regarding what needs to be done to improve healthcare.”

About the Clinical Informatics Board Certification:
The Clinical Informatics Board Certification grew out of the work of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Clinical Informatics is the application of informatics and information technology to deliver healthcare services, and is also referred to as applied clinical informatics and operational informatics. Clinical informatics includes a wide range of topics ranging from clinical decision support to visual images (e.g. radiological, pathological, dermatological, ophthalmological, etc); from clinical documentation to provider order entry systems; and from system design to system implementation and adoption issues.
