Baja Ferries, a leading North American ferry company, today announced it received a license to operate a passenger and licensed cargo route between the Miami, Fla., and Havana, Cuba. With an investment of $100 million, the company is planning to move approximately 1,000 passengers daily between the two countries.

Operations are scheduled to begin mid-September 2015 to coincide with the Pope’s visit to Cuba. Baja Ferries expects to use a modern cruiseferry that can carry up to 2,000 passengers and has 500 cabins.

“The granting of this license means to Baja Ferries the culmination of an effort that begun over 10 years ago,” said Oscar Ruano, COO of Baja Ferries USA. “Today, thanks to the continuing improvement of relations between Cuba and the U.S., this approval will enable us to be the first company to connect by sea these two nations.”

Ruano added, “With this new route, Baja Ferries takes another step in becoming a major worldwide ferry operator. By receiving this license, we hold a firm conviction to become a high-quality bridge for the benefit of both countries, reuniting families and assisting in the social, cultural and sporting exchanges between Cuba and the United States.”
