Dr. Trace Curry Performs First ORBERA™ Intra-gastric Balloon in Ohio at JourneyLite, a New Incisionless Option For The Treatment of Obesity
CINCINNATI, OHIO (PRWEB) September 01, 2015 -- Dr. Trace Curry successfully placed one of the first ORBERA™ Intra-gastric Balloons in the US today at JourneyLite of Cincinnati. In the last month the FDA has approved two intra-gastric balloons, the ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System and the ReShape Duo™. These procedures represent the first incisionless, reversible, weight loss procedures available to Americans.
Dr. Curry, medical director at JourneyLite, states “This procedure really fills a void in the treatment of obesity in America, as previously patients only had the option of either a weight loss pill, or a much more aggressive surgical procedure. With this procedure there are no incisions, patients can go home the same day, and be back to normal activity the following day.”
Performed with a simple endoscopy under sedation, the balloon procedure itself takes about 20-30 minutes. ORBERA™ is then guided into the stomach and filled with saline to about the size of a grapefruit, which causes the patient to be less hungry and get full earlier. Patients are followed closely by Dr. Curry’s weight loss team, and after 6 months the balloon is removed, again with a simple endoscopic procedure. The patient is then engaged in an ongoing program for another 6 months to encourage development of the proper behaviors to maintain their weight loss. In the US clinical trials, patients who received treatment with Orbera lost 40 percent of their excess body weight, or 3.1 times more weight than the patients in the medical weight loss arm of the study.
The first patient, a 39 year old mother and manager of a veterinary clinic suffering from degenerative disc disease and hypertension, has been struggling with excess weight most of her life. She was extremely excited to have this new opportunity to make a lifestyle change and improve her health. The procedure went well, she had no pain, and was on her way home about an hour after the procedure was completed. Her goal is to lose 40 pounds.
Dr. Curry recognizes that obesity is a chronic disease and is pleased to be one of the first physicians in the country to offer this new treatment that can help transform patients’ lives and improve their health. His practice offers comprehensive management of obesity including medical weight loss, gastric balloon, sleeve gastrectomy, LAP BAND™, and gastric bypass. JourneyLite is a multi-disciplinary outpatient surgery center that specializes in the treatment of obesity.
